Social Classes
Social class is determined by economics and skin color. People with darker brown skin are economically and socially disadvantages. Even though women make up 40% of the work force in Brazil, they are typically found in lower paid jobs. In 1988 the constitution prohibits discrimination against women, but inequalities still exist. The middle and upper classes often only have brief interaction with the lower classes.
Family Structure
Families tend to be large (although family size has been diminishing in recent years) and the extended family is quite close. The family is the foundation of social structure and forms the basis of stability for most people.
